| Koh Samui is easily accessed by air, land and sea. The majority of international travellers arrive by air, via Bangkok, Phuket or Singapore.
Bangkok and Thai Airways have a number of daily flights to the island, making this the most convenient way to get here. Daily ferries operating from several piers along the mainland coastal area of Surat Thani also carry many passengers to the island. |

It is possible to hire a car and drive to Samui, finishing of course with a ferry ride. Departing from either Bangkok or Phuket, the roads are multi-laned and very good. From Bangkok it is double-lane highway all the way to Surat Thani and, similarly, for most of the leg to the ferries. The trip from Bangkok to Surat Thani usually takes around 8-10 hours.
Along the way there are plenty of gasoline stations and places to buy food and take a break. Be aware though, from Surat Thani it is still another hour's travelling time to the ferry terminals. You can also expect to often find long queues at the ferry terminals, so plan ahead. But don't worry, should you miss the last ferry for the day, cheap and clean accommodation is available at the ferry terminals on both the mainland and the island.
From Phuket the roads are good but they are single lane. The trip takes about 5 hours, passing through some beautiful scenery. From Hat Yai, there is a double lane highway up to Surat Thani and the journey takes about 6 hours. |
The Bus Companies
To travel by coach, you have the choice of several companies, and it is a most economical means of travel. Generally coaches go onboard the ferry and take you directly to Nathon from where you will be able to get one of the numerous local taxis or baht buses for the various towns and beaches around the island or, alternatively, hire your own vehicle.
From Bangkok
If you are in Bangkok, any travel agency will be able to offer you a ticket to Samui, from as cheap as 250 to 300 baht (on Khao San Road) to approx. 600 baht for a VIP air-conditioned bus accommodating around 24 passengers.
The Route
All the coaches stop several times along the route to allow you to have a meal and a short break. Most travel overnight, leaving Bangkok between 5.30pm and 8 pm with the journey lasting around 10-12 hours. VIP buses have toilet and washroom facitities onboard.
Surat Thani and the ferry port at Donsak is located about 650 kilometres south of Bangkok.
